Wow my first visit in months, the sanctuary is really flooded with water almost everywhere.Lots of waterfowl, ducks and flamingoes. My first sighting of a black crowned night heron in over 18 months and two African Purple Swamphens which is also a new sighting this year. Since the problems with the water the sanctuary has taken time to recover hence the excitement of the sightings mentioned above.Lots of Hottentot teal,Southern Pochard and the normal suspects.Blach Throated canary made an appereance and the yellow billed ducks are mating. With so much water around i was unable to access the back part of the sanctuary.Did spot a pair of Common Swifts and also White Throated Swallows. Not sure if the latter have over wintered or if they are new arrivals.
After 8 months of devastating drought conditions due to broken water pipes the sanctuary has water again. The sanctuary has been devastated with a huge loss of bird life, specials i would see on most visits have disappeared.Black Crowned Night Heron, Purple swamp-hen,Black Heron,Striated Heron,African Rail,Flamingo's and Little Bittern ,

Hopefully the birds will return and the sanctuary will recover,A lot of weeds everywhere and a surprising number of Curlew Sandpipers,at least a flock of 50 birds.A Rondebult lifer for me.
Weather incredibly nasty today,After driving Eendracht and Blesboklaagte Roads I popped in for a visit. A very quick visit given the conditions. Not much to talk about a few Flamingos, a single little Grebe,Coots and a few White Breasted Cormorants.Water levels are perfect for waders right now which we can expect to start arriving in 6 weeks. How ever on the Wider Gauteng Challenge page on facebook i see reports of waders already starting to arrive at Mkombo Dam.The sanctuary is really ugly this time of the year and a lot of litter is lying around.

The picnic area is undergoing a major face lift. The grass which battles to grow under the White Stinkwoods and the grazing by the animals in winter is been replaced by slate paving with large flower beds. I notice Clivia and Iris are been planted so it should be awesome in a couple of years.

Hide number two has a broken door,a lot of burning has taken place which is a reason for such a low bird count yesterday besides the weather being ugly.As you come in the entrance on the left hand side a eco gym has been erected similar to the one at Walter Sisulu Botantical Gardens in Roodepoort.
A disturbing mail from Brian Colahan an Ornithologist from the Free State about Mallards had me rushing off there this morning.A very grey and overcast day indeed. No Mallards to be seen thankfully but a Hybrid Egyptian Goose/Mallard was. Have seen one before ,but a Yellow Billed duck/Mallard Hybrid which is the more common hybrid.

The really good news is that the old security company has been replaced and my nemesis security lady is there no more. What a pleasure. A huge thatched lapa has been erected ? Not sure why. A fitness class of some sort was been done in the picnic area,at least 50 folk doing calisthenics to some loud high powered 180 beats to the minute music blaring from a golf with it's boot open.Water levels are good right now and the water is also clean.

Black Crowned Night Heron, lots of Thick Billed Weaver,Hottentot Teal, Red Billed Teal,Greater Flamingo,Yellow billed Duck , a huge flock of Egyptian Geese,Little Grebe, where among the sightings.
Have not been to the reserve since December 2014.I suppose that the state of the sanctuary has put me off a little. I also have a problem with the lady security guard who always tries to hit me up for money or food or whatever. I also do not like her attitude and to be quite blunt i do not trust her at all.
I will make an attempt to get there in the next couple of weeks and post a more substantial post.I have also found that it is mainly photographers who are visiting now .I have over the last 5 years seen a huge increase in birders which is awesome and I as well as many well known birders have felt this is due to the relatively cheap level entry digital cameras available now.

I have no problem with photographers as i am one myself, however when one chap has two cameras setup simultaneously and hogs the hide i do get a little upset.

Anyway happy birding and if any of you want to add to the blog please do so so we can keep this updated and running for all those folk who want to visit. I have had over 5400 visits to something i started mainly as a hobby and because there was no other site dedicated exclusively to Rondebult.

Hi all firstly a great birding 2015 for all. I visited the sanctuary today and was greatly disappointed. Although the walkway in front of hide 3 has been repaired water levels have dropped dramatically leaving vast expanses exposed. The dam in front of hide 1 is completely dry. This has a huge impact on the birds. Right now most birds are in the middle of there breeding cycle. No water means the birds will most probably abandon there nests and move on.Not sure what the reasoning is behind the drop in water levels as there is no one to ask right now.

Some poor photographer left a Nikon teleconvertor in one of the hides and the lady security guard found it and is trying to sell it to who-ever arrives. I have asked her to hand it in but not sure if she will do that.

Sightings for the short time spent there included Black Heron,Little egret, wattled lapwing, african reed warbler, willow warbler, red throated wryneck, stone chat, tawny flanked prinia, reed cormorant.little grebe and marsh harrier.

Good news on todays visit, water levels are coming down and a big clean up has taken place. The walk way in front of hide three has been replaced. All the weeds in front of hides 1,2 and three have been cleared, giving good views. The area on the right of hide number two is flooded opening a whole new area to waders, ducks, herons and teals.Today i managed to get hottentot and red billed teal, yellow billed duck, squacco and black headed night heron, african reed warbler, greater flamingo, grey headed gull, little grebe, pied kingfisher, spur winged goose, common swift, white throated swallow and a Rondebult lifer for me African Marsh Harrier.I have been coming here for over ten years and never seen one. Work done here since my last visit is heart warming although still a bit to do. In saying that there s a marked improvement of the general standard of cleanliness that has been missing for the last year.
Have not visited since May,since my last visit things have gone backwards. The main gate is not working or it was not on my visit. The lady security guard refuses to open the gate so you have to get out and do it yourself.Water levels are the highest i have ever seen them resulting in flooding over extensive areas of the reserve. This in turn creates a huge feeding area for the birds so the dams are basically empty of bird life. This in itself is not a bad thing but a fair bit of walking is needed and i was rather lazy. Species list for my two hour visit where. Tawny Flanked Prinia, avocet, moccoa duck, spur winged goose, grey headed gull, black crowned night heron, yellow billed duck, little grebe, coots, black crake, levaillants cisticola, african reed warbler, black throated canary, masked weaver, moorhen and reed cormorant.Did not take many pics.Extensive burning has taken place and the picnic area is a complete dust bowl. The domestic geese are becoming a huge problem and seemed to almost doubled in numbers.
Popped in this morning as i have not visited for awhile. Sorry to say what a mess. Water levels are incredibly high,a few ducks, countless coots and that was it.The winter has arrived here and hopefully will get rid of the huge growth in front of the hides. The domestic geese are making a real mess and i had to remove my shoes when getting back into my car.The door on hide two has been broken, plastic bottles are strewn around the picnic area and generally not looking good. The lady security guard was on top form shouting at me too open the gate as the motor was broken, gave me a surly look when i told her she needed to be polite to visitors and refused to open the window to give me the keys for the hides. She has been a royal pain for some time now and i had a chat to her supervisor to have her replaced. There is a new manager there now whom i chatted to and he gave me assurances the place would be in better nick on my next visit which will be next week.
Sorry i have been tardy in posting this but year end was completely off the wall at our company, i then went on holiday and as Murphy law would have it no internet where i went. Anyway my visit was short as i was testing a new canon lens.
Water levels are still very high so no mud flats for the waders to forage on.
Popped in this morning to check the water levels.Awesome news all the pans are now full, I know it is a trade off birders v photographers but as a birder who takes photos i am really chuffed that the levels are back to normal. With the rain we have had over the last week all the wetlands behind hide number one and two are really wet and there are lots of specials on offer.Granted a little walking is needed but it is worth it. I heard Willow Warbler on the path to hide number two but never saw it.I did notice that they are erecting a huge game capturing fence, not sure if they are removing animals or putting more in. Am currently trying to find out and will keep the blog updated with news as soon as i know.
Today's visit was primarily to check out the water levels and test out a sigma 150-500mm lens.Have had the lens for about six years but never use it.Camera shake is the biggest reason I do not use it and had forgotten that it is not as sharp as my Canon f4 300mm set up.

Good news is that the water is flowing again,Hide number one is full again and hopefully will stay full for the rest of the season.Hide number two is back to normal and I reckon the islands in the big pan will be gone by next week-end. 3 Pied kingfishers made an appearance as well as Ruff,Wood,Marsh and Common Sandpiper.I counted 11 adult Black Crowned Night Heron,Grey,Black Headed and Squacco heron showed.Greater flamingos still around.I thought the Black Swan had left but it is still around. Strong smell of dung hung over the picnic area and i think the grass is starting to come back. The Peacocks are in full breeding mode and showing of a lot.A solitary Afican Spoonbill was hanging out.
The three pics here of 1.Black Swan,2.Ruff and lastly the Wood Sandpiper where almost salvageable but will not make it into my library.
The testing of the lens was a failure and out of 400 pics taken not one is good enough, found the lens to be extremely slow on the auto focus setting, also overcast so shooting 1250 ISO and had way to much noise I could not even get rid of in Photoshop.

Really warm this morning.Water levels have dropped at least another two feet and is close to the limit of what the pans can comfortably sustain .What fish that are left are being forced into smaller bodies of water making them very vulnerable to being fished out by the large numbers of heron.Really good morning giving me a count of 38 species in the two hours I was there.
Very warm this morning as i set out for the BS before heading for the office, once again the pan in front of hide no 1 is empty, the continual emptying of this pan is causing birds to disappear. The breeding pair of malachite kingfishers have already departed.Water levels however in the other pans is consistent and the area around hide number two produced sightings of black crake and african rail.A Black Swan was floating around in front of hide number 5. Obviously an escaped bird and hopefully it survives and moves on. Black crowned night herons where plentiful as where Squacco herons. In fact also saw Grey,Black Headed and Striated[Green backed]. Caught a glimpse of a couple of Ruffs skim past hide number 3. Not a bad couple of hours all in all. Still amazed at how many folk still do not know where the keys are kept as there is a sign right next to the gate.
Back again this morning, hooked up with an old mate Les.A pleasant couple of hours.A tad chilly at 3 degrees c. The water is running into the pans again and hide number 1 is full again.A trade off , the levels in pans 2 and 3 has risen. The willows are shooting so spring is around the corner. A fleeting sighting of a green backed heron and a nice look at a little bittern .Lots of black crowned night herons basking in the early morning sun.No sightings of the SA Shelducks.

I see the lady guard is back and she can be obnoxious ,treat her with kid gloves as she can be really rude and not sure if she is trustworthy.

My first sighting of the African Purple Swamphen this year at the BS.
It has been sometime since i visited my local patch, with commitments elsewhere it has been difficult to get here.As always in winter the sanctuary looks shoddy. This has been compounded by the buck moving into the picnic area to eat what little grass is left. I have made the observation earlier that there is not enough food for the amount of plains animals in the sanctuary and in winter they have to fend for themselves.Huge amounts of animal droppings all over the area.

The storm last night broke some rather large deadwood off the trees next to hide number 3.One of these large branches has fallen over the walkway leading to the hide. This walkway is still in a dangerous condition and care should be taken when using it.Last night's rain has dampened the winter dust and left a good african smell in the air.

Good sightings of all the regular fowl including a pair of SA Shelduck. Saw a pair in the autumn could be they overwintered here. The flamingos definitely did and i wonder if the rather warm winter we have had influenced there decision to stay.Water levels have fallen by at least a foot exposing mudbanks which is encouraging as our spring approaches. White throated swallows, brown throated martin and common swift where all hawking for insects over the pans, a good sign that spring is close and the migrants have left there northern hemisphere breeding grounds and are on there way.

Cape shoveller,Hottententot teal.Yellow billed duck, green backed heron, various warbler and weavers also made an appearance.
I popped past on Saturday and could not get into the sanctuary as there was a power failure. Te security guard was unable to open as she did not have keys for the gate motor which was a little frustrating.

I went back on Sunday and the water levels are extremely high. There is a large flock of Flamingo's. I counted at least 45 individual birds. I am not sure how long they will be around for but i am expecting them to start there migration to Kenya soon. A few white faced ducks, common moorhen and spur winged geese around but nothing much happening.

Good sightings of some really good birds at Suikerbos though. Fairy flycatcher, black eagle, steppe buzzard, capped wheatear, and another european roller.

Rondebult was very quite today. The water levels are extremely high with the weeds really making it difficult in front of hide one and two obscuring the view of the bird life. The green seeds are starting to cover the water surface again and in particular at hide umber two. Not many pics today but a couple of nice sightings in particular this Malachite Kingfisher adult in front of hide number one.The squacco heron was seen at hide number three. While there i met a polish chap Peter.Had a nice chat about lens and cameras and his enthusiasm was great.

The sanctuary is looking quite shoddy as we head into late summer, all the wading areas in front of all the hides are covered in grass and waist high weeds, coupled with very high water levels there are no waders at all. I did manage to see a flock of little stints as they flashed past and head towards the smaller water pans at the back of the reserve. This area is supposedly out of bounds to folk but i see no harm in taking a walk up next to the boundary fence east of hide number one.The few visitors to this area will not impact at all and some good sightings are common. In fact ruff, three banded plover, african snipe, black crake are common around these shallow ponds which are seasonal.

Black Crowned Night herons are common here and there are a few breeding pairs so young are regularly sighted.

Good weather for the first few hours and then the clouds rolled in and the light got to bad to take pics.Water levels are still very high and the smell at hide number two is pretty bad.Sightings this morning produced nothing new. The water at hide number one has not retreated which is good news. Got some pics of a little egret hunting in front of hide number one. Really interesting fact is that there has been no water here for over 18 months and yet this egret was catching fish at a furious rate.I have some pics with the fish in the egrets beak, not sure if they are very large tadpoles or baby barbel[catfish]the one pic under enlargement shows a flat head with long body looks like a barbel but not sure. I know barbel will bury themselves deep in the mud as the water dries out and then come out when the water has come back. Not sure if this is the case here.
I got the impression that they really enjoyed themselves and where full of praise for the work done here and the condition of the sanctuary. Really good to get positive feedback from new folk visiting. Showed me some settings on my camera and really gratefull to them for there help.

Spent a few hours here this morning, water is clean although the levels are very high.Hide no 1 has water for the first time in 18 months, now just some time for the weeds to die down and it should be a productive hide once again. The trash from xmas and boxing day is an eyesore, even though huge bins are supplied for refuse they are not utilized by visitors .From what i understand you are not allowed to consume alcohol here but from the amount of bottles lying around this is not enforced.

Once again i must recommend that visits over public holidays should be avoided as the hooligan brigade are always there and make a visit a tad uncomfortable.
Very quite today, the water levels have risen quite substantially since my last visit. The water is clean but there is a little smell around of rotting vegetation. I counted 13 greater flamingos which consisted of adult and juvenile.all the normal ducks expected to be found here during summer.Very little warbler activity in fact heard and saw the cape reed warbler only.List for this morning are.
Burchells coucal,white faced,yellow billed duck,Grey,Black Headed and Black crowned night heron,whiskered tern,red billed teal,southern pochard,cape shoveller,greater flamingo,levaillants cisticola,white throated and greater striped swallows,african purple swamp hen,little bittern,spur winged goose,all three ibis,bishops,myna and the doves.
It was very hot when I left at 06.30 a warm 20 degrees c.I wanted to see if the Flamingos where still around. Most of them have moved on leaving about 20 Juveniles and Immature behind.Water levels continue to drop which obviously suits the Photographers as they are hoping more sandbanks will bring the birds closer to the hides. This is not an ideal situation from a pure bird point of view because a lot of the food bearing mud banks are now exposed to the hot spring weather which will dry out the mud and send the birds away in search of food. A trade off I suppose but we must remember it is actually a Bird Sanctuary and not a photographers Mecca and we need to be careful we do not end up with the scarcer species not disappearing. Not a bad two hours birding giving me a count of 32 species. The best for me was the fact there are a breeding pair of Red Necked Wrynecks in the picnic area giving me a lifer for Rondebult taking my count to 135 species for the BS.
This Morning was really chilly. The wind blowing was hand numbing but did not lesson the good birding the sanctuary gave up.A lot of Greater Flamingo where on hand in fact the most i have ever seen here at least 70 individuals where present in a mixed flock of juveniles and adults. The ever present Swamphens and Little Bittern where seen at hide number 2. The White Throated Swallows are back as well as Squacco, BlackCrowned and Black Headed Heron.Water levels are very very low, I suppose this is the result of the water been turned of or diverted for the photographers. This in itself is not a problem but the resulting stench and huge amounts of thick green algae in front of hide number two is really not pleasant
